Triorail Bahnfunk
Triorail Bahnfunk is a German developer and supplier of GSM-R radio modules, terminals, and test equipment for railway communication, headquartered in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm in Bavaria.
According to the company’s own history, its operating roots go back to 2002, when Triorail GmbH & Co. KG was founded; the company relocated its headquarters to Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm in 2015. The current legal entity, Triorail Bahnfunk GmbH, was formed through a 2020 merger with the operating predecessor and is registered in Ingolstadt. It employs around 25 people, according to its profile in the catalogue of UNIFE, the European Rail Industry Association.
Triorail is certified to ISO 9001:2015, with a scope covering design, production, and sales of GSM-R modules, terminals, phones, and test tools.
Products
The core product range consists of GSM-R transceiver modules in 2-watt and 8-watt versions, built to the European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network (EIRENE) and Mobile radio for Railway Networks in Europe (MORANE) specifications that define railway radio across Europe. The modules are embedded by system integrators in cab radios, shunting handhelds, emergency phones, radio dispatchers, and ETCS data-only radios (EDOR).
The 2-watt TRM-5 generation targets, per the company, intermodulation and blocking performance beyond the ETSI professional mobile standard, aimed at reception close to public 2G, 3G, and 4G networks operating near the railway band. The ext variants additionally cover the extended EGSM-R frequency range.
The 8-watt line includes the TRC-5RMe H in rack design and the TRC-5AP2e in embedded design for voice and data applications, plus the TRC-6RM for EDGE and GPRS data applications such as ETCS/EDOR implementations. Terminals with RS232 and USB interfaces allow integration into PC-based applications.
Triorail also supplies test equipment for GSM-R and migration projects, including its current TTS trace and test systems for modules and terminals.
Market position
Triorail operates as a component supplier rather than a system house: its modules sit inside other vendors’ end products across onboard, trackside, and station applications. Interference immunity is the recurring technical theme, reflecting the operational reality of GSM-R networks sharing rooftop antenna space and adjacent spectrum with public mobile networks.
The company is an active member of European and international standardisation committees in railway connectivity and communications, including work within ETSI Rail Telecommunications.
Current activity
The onboard radio interface (OBRAD) for the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) is defined as a reference point in the FRMCS architecture set out by ETSI and the International Union of Railways (UIC). ETSI has since published a technical report on the OBRAD interface. Triorail participates in the standardisation committees behind FRMCS and is developing FRMCS radio modules for the coming migration away from GSM-R.
