Traktionssysteme Austria
Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA) is an Austrian manufacturer of electric traction motors, generators and drives for rail vehicles and commercial road vehicles, headquartered in Wiener Neudorf south of Vienna.
TSA was established in 2000 through a management buy-out of the former ABB plant in Wiener Neudorf, a site that has produced traction and propulsion equipment since Brown Boveri opened it in 1960.
For the 2023 financial year, the company reported around 690 employees across the TSA Group worldwide and revenue of just under EUR 120 million. Voith Group and the Swiss holding company PCS Holding acquired a majority stake in 2020; the Austrian company register lists PCS Holding with around 48 percent, Voith with 37 percent and managing director Robert Tencl with just under 15 percent.
Core products
TSA develops and manufactures traction motors and drives, covering asynchronous motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, generators and wheelset gearboxes. Applications span trams, metros, regional and mainline rolling stock as well as electric buses and commercial vehicles.
Production of subcomponents for asynchronous motors takes place at Traktionssysteme Bosnia in Tuzla, in operation since 2010. The group also operates a US sales office, a procurement office in Shanghai and a joint venture with Medha Servo Drives in Hyderabad, India.
Market position
The company states that more than 90,000 of its motors have been delivered over the past 25 years, with products in service in around 70 countries. TSA drives power trams and metro trains in Vienna.
Recent activity
Two contracts were announced in June 2026: 1,500 traction motors for Stadler’s Citylink tram-train vehicles, and 240 motors for the INNEO metro trains that Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) is building for Oslo.
Bus manufacturer Solaris signed a framework supply agreement with TSA in June 2024, with the first motors delivered in December 2024.
