Tesmec Rail
Tesmec Rail is the rail business unit of the Italian Tesmec group, designing and manufacturing machines for railway electrification, line maintenance and infrastructure diagnostics.
The parent group Tesmec was established in 1951 and is headquartered in Grassobbio, near Bergamo. It is listed on the Euronext STAR Milan segment of Euronext Milan and, according to the group, employs more than 900 people.
Rail production is based in Monopoli and Bitetto, both near Bari, complemented by group plants elsewhere in Italy, in France and in the United States. The group maintains research and development units in Fidenza, Padua and Patrica.
Products and services
Tesmec Rail applies the group’s tension stringing technology, originally developed for power line construction, to the installation of railway catenary. Its constant-tension stringing units and multipurpose catenary maintenance vehicles are built to the EN 14033 standard series.
The diagnostic line comprises vehicles equipped with integrated measuring systems for infrastructure monitoring and inspection. Measured parameters include track geometry and wear to EN 13848, rail corrugation, turnout geometry, contact wire geometry and wear, and the dynamic interaction between pantograph and contact wire.
Data collected on board is transferred to a centralised cloud platform for analysis, supporting predictive maintenance of track and infrastructure.
Current activity
In October 2025, Tesmec Rail delivered a new-generation Tipo 4 diagnostic vehicle to Italian infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), under a tender won in 2022. The vehicle integrates more than 15 diagnostic systems covering traction power, superstructure, signalling and telecommunications, and operates at inspection speeds up to 140 km/h on 3 kV DC or diesel power.
In March 2026, Slovenian infrastructure manager SŽ-Infrastruktura awarded Tesmec Rail two contracts worth a combined EUR 71 million for the supply of 21 railway network maintenance vehicles, signed in Ljubljana with a term of four and a half years. In July 2026, Tesmec signed a three-year, renewable framework agreement with Politecnico di Bari on railway infrastructure research.
