SCONRAIL
SCONRAIL is a Swiss conformity assessment and certification body for the railway sector, headquartered in Winterthur and active in vehicle, infrastructure and maintenance certification across Europe.
SCONRAIL AG was founded in 2006, its name short for Swiss Conformity ON RAIL. The head office is in Winterthur, with SCONRAIL GmbH in Germany and SCONRAIL UK Ltd in Sutton near London.
According to the company’s own channels, it draws on around 100 railway experts.
Core services
A central service area is ECM certification and compliance: SCONRAIL certifies entities in charge of maintenance (ECM) and their maintenance workshops across Europe under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/779. The process runs from an optional gap analysis through audit to certificate issue and periodic surveillance.
SCONRAIL AG is Notified Body Interoperability NB 1991, covering all railway subsystems under the Interoperability Directive (EU) 2016/797, and acts as an assessment body for safety under the common safety method for risk evaluation. SCONRAIL GmbH is Notified Body NB 2892 for the rolling stock subsystem under the same directive.
In Switzerland, SCONRAIL AG has been a notified authorised body since 2006 and is designated by the Federal Office of Transport as certification body for ECMs of all vehicle categories. In Germany, SCONRAIL GmbH is recognised by the Federal Railway Authority as a designated body for the rolling stock subsystem and the vehicle-side part of control-command and signalling.
Market position
SCONRAIL AG is accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 as a certification body for railway components, subsystems and ECM management systems, and to ISO/IEC 17020 as a type A inspection body. Its assessments address the regulatory layer above the maintenance and workshop equipment deployed in the depots and workshops it certifies.
Clients include vehicle manufacturers, operators, maintenance workshops and infrastructure projects, served from offices in several European countries.
