Schwihag
Schwihag AG is a Swiss developer and supplier of rail fastening and switch components, headquartered in Tägerwilen and serving main-line, high-speed, heavy-haul and urban networks worldwide.
Schwihag was founded in 1971 by Karl-Heinrich Schwiede in Tägerwilen, canton of Thurgau, where the company remains headquartered. It is privately held and has grown from a Swiss engineering office into a group with production sites and sales offices in several countries.
Serial production runs through the German subsidiary Schwihag GmbH in Schkeuditz near Leipzig, which employs more than 90 people, alongside further production at Schwihag’s UK and US sites and regional companies in Spain and India. The German site covers CNC machining, heat treatment, cold forming, plastic injection moulding and shot peening.
Products and services
The product programme centres on rail fastening systems for plain track and switches, including resilient fastenings, inner bracing systems for stock rails, integrated roller slide plates, switch point setting systems and hollow steel sleepers. The inner bracing stock rail fastening became a standard component at Deutsche Bahn, according to the company.
Schwihag operates an in-house test centre in Tägerwilen for static and dynamic load testing of fastening and switch components. Testing is carried out to EN 13481, EN 13146, ISO 22074 and American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) requirements as well as national approval guidelines.
Market position
Schwihag components are installed on high-speed lines, heavy-haul freight corridors, tramways and metro systems across track and infrastructure projects worldwide.
Schwihag holds patents on several of its fastening and switch components. Recent filings include a rail fastening system in December 2025 and a box sleeper design in 2023–2024, according to patent-register data.
Current activity
Schwihag has manufactured in Doncaster since 2008 alongside its Leipzig and Grandview, Missouri sites, and in 2024 acquired the British company Direct Track Solutions to expand its UK portfolio. Schwihag is listed as an exhibitor at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, running from 22 to 25 September.
