Schunk Transit Systems
Schunk Transit Systems is a German manufacturer of pantographs and current collection technology, including condition monitoring systems for pantographs and overhead contact lines.
The company is headquartered in Wettenberg in Hesse and operates as a business unit of the Schunk Group, which is owned by the Ludwig-Schunk-Stiftung e.V. and reports more than 10,000 employees across 26 countries. A further development and production site operates in Nußdorf am Haunsberg near Salzburg, Austria, alongside a manufacturing facility in Wisconsin, US.
The company supplies pantograph and current collection technology to rail operators worldwide, and applies the same vehicle-side approach to pantograph and catenary monitoring: it instruments its own pantographs rather than observing the contact line from separate wayside installations.
Core products
The OnTrack monitoring system retrofits sensors to the collector head and base frame of a pantograph. During regular service, the sensors continuously record contact strip condition, contact force and zigzag geometry.
The data supports early damage detection, maintenance planning and root cause analysis after incidents. Because the system upgrades pantographs already in operation, the hardware requirement is limited to the sensor package itself.
OnTrack sits on top of the core portfolio: pantographs for all speed ranges, third-rail current collectors, contact strips, grounding contacts and carbon-fibre grounding systems that divert stray currents away from bearings. The company also performs catenary measurement runs as a service.
Market position
Schunk supplies vehicle manufacturers and operators across mainline, high-speed, metro and light rail applications, with rail power transmission activity dating back to the early electrification of rail transport, according to the company.
OnTrack extends this mechanical portfolio into sensors and measurement, turning the pantograph itself into a data source on the state of the infrastructure. At InnoTrans 2022, Schunk and ZF signed a memorandum of understanding to combine OnTrack hardware with ZF’s connect@rail data platform for digital condition monitoring.
Current activity
The related Schunk Smart Charging line applies the same pantograph technology to electric bus charging. In Seattle, the company has supplied 123 inverted charging pantographs, currently being installed at a King County Metro depot, with full commissioning scheduled for spring 2026.
