Oleo International
Oleo International is a British manufacturer of hydraulic energy absorption systems for rail, supplying side buffers, couplers, anti-climbers and buffer stops from its factory in Coventry, England.
Oleo traces its origins to 1934, when cofounder Peter Thornhill developed an aircraft undercarriage strut using a free-floating piston — the design principle behind the Oleo rail buffer. Thornhill patented a hydraulic railway buffer in 1951 and established Oleo Pneumatics Ltd in 1952 together with cofounder Jack Onions.
The company was acquired by the T A Savery group in 2009. Its rail and industrial business is today registered as Oleo Rail & Industrial Ltd, headquartered at Longford Road, Exhall, Coventry.
In 2021 trade press reported around 265 employees worldwide, with roughly 220 based in Coventry; the figures are company-supplied and have not been updated from an independent source since. Beyond the UK, Oleo operates a production site in Shanghai and company entities in India, the US, Germany and Singapore.
Products for rail
Oleo’s rail portfolio covers crash energy management across the vehicle: side buffers, crash absorbers and deformation tubes, anti-climbers, and — since the launch of its Sentry coupler range — complete couplers manufactured in-house.
Bringing coupler production in-house ended its previous reliance on third parties to integrate Oleo buffers and deformation tubes into finished couplers.
On the infrastructure side, the company supplies buffer stops for depots, stations and terminal tracks. It also offers overhaul services for side buffers and coupler capsules, and collision simulation through its DigitalTrains software suite, used to model whole-train crash energy management.
The core technology combines hydraulic energy absorption with a gas return spring. The company states that more than 2,500,000 of its hydraulic and deformation energy absorbers are in operation worldwide.
Market position
Oleo supplies both rolling stock manufacturers and operators, across passenger and freight vehicles. The company is ISO 9001 certified and states that its rail products conform to European and international standards including International Union of Railways (UIC) and Association of American Railroads (AAR) requirements.
By 1960 the company was supplying 1,000 hydraulic buffers per week to British Railways. The company exports the large majority of its production.
Current activity
Oleo has added a modular rail buffer range to its manufacturing programme, positioning the company to deliver buffers, couplers and buffer stops as a combined package. The company has also announced a purpose-built track testing facility at Barrow Hill in Derbyshire, described in mid-2025 as close to opening.
