Metra Mess- und Frequenztechnik
Metra Mess- und Frequenztechnik is a German manufacturer of piezoelectric accelerometers and vibration measurement equipment, based in Radebeul near Dresden.
The company traces its roots to 1943, when it was founded in Radebeul near Dresden as Elektrounternehmen Unis by Richard Weber. It was renamed Metra in 1954 and began developing piezoelectric vibration sensors from 1959.
Metra was nationalised in 1972, becoming the state-owned VEB Metra Meß- und Frequenztechnik, and was incorporated into the state holding Kombinat Präcitronic in 1981, retaining its name and products throughout. Following German reunification, the company was reprivatised in 1990 to Manfred Weber, son of the founder.
It has remained an independent, family-owned business since, now in its third generation under Michael Weber. Metra operates as a registered sole proprietorship (e.K.) and employs around 25 people across development, production, and administration.
Products
Metra’s core product line consists of piezoelectric accelerometers, charge amplifiers, vibration calibrators, and machine condition monitoring equipment. Individual product listings include accelerometer variants marketed for railway applications, alongside variants for automotive and general industrial condition monitoring; the company does not present a separate, dedicated rail product line.
Its OEM accelerometer series, including charge-output and IEPE-compatible models, are designed for integration into instruments and monitoring systems rather than sold as standalone consumer devices.
Metra’s published technical literature on piezoelectric accelerometer theory has been cited in academic research on accelerometer selection for rail vehicle monitoring applications.
Market position and certification
Metra holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, introduced in 2019 as part of an integrated management system. Since 2022, its calibration laboratory has been DAkkS-accredited under DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.
Its own published reference list includes named customers from the automotive, aerospace, machine-building, and electrical industries, among them Alstom and Bombardier Transportation.
Current activity
Metra continues to operate as an independent, owner-led manufacturer, with no current parent-group or private equity ownership. The company’s product catalogue and technical documentation are publicly available through its own channels.
