Medcom
Medcom is a Polish designer and manufacturer of power electronics for rail vehicles and public transport, headquartered in Warsaw and supplying traction inverters and converters to vehicle builders worldwide.
Medcom Sp. z o.o. was founded in 1988 and is based in Warsaw, Poland, where all production takes place. According to the company, it employed more than 300 people as of 2023.
The company states it has developed and manufactured more than 28,000 devices across rail, tram, metro, trolleybus, and electric bus applications, alongside industrial power supply systems. Its website is medcom.com.pl.
Traction inverters and converters
Medcom’s core rail portfolio covers traction inverters, auxiliary converters, battery chargers, and complete propulsion systems for locomotives, electric multiple units, metro trains, and trams. The multi-system product line covers 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC 16.7 Hz, and 25 kV AC 50 Hz.
A central technology line is silicon carbide (SiC) power electronics, which the company applies in both traction inverters and auxiliary converters. Medcom states that Wrocław’s Moderus Gamma trams with SiC propulsion consume up to 30 percent less energy than the operator’s older trams with insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) propulsion.
The company also produces the E-recycler, a system introduced in 2013 that stores regenerative braking energy and returns it to the overhead line. Multi-system traction converters of the SFT-3000k-MSU type, combined with SiC auxiliary converters, power Newag’s Griffin E4MSUa four-axle electric locomotives.
Market position
Medcom supplies rolling stock manufacturers including Newag, Pesa, Modertrans, Stadler, Hyundai Rotem, CAF, and Siemens Mobility’s US operation. Applications include Warsaw and Wrocław trams, Warsaw metro trains, and hybrid Impuls multiple units operating in several Polish regions.
In a 2018 statement, the company said its products had been delivered to 38 countries on six continents, with roughly one third of turnover generated by export. Quality certifications cited by the company include ISO 9001 and the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS).
Within the traction segment, Medcom has equipped Poland’s first hybrid multiple unit, the Newag Impuls 36WEh, with traction inverters, auxiliary converters, and battery chargers. The company also delivered a battery supply system enabling Stadler’s Kraków trams to run without overhead contact lines.
Current activity
Medcom exhibited at the TRAKO International Railway Fair in Gdańsk in September 2025, presenting its SFT-3000k-MSU/PSM-175-SiC-MSU multi-system traction converters for the Griffin E4MSUa locomotive. According to the company, the converters achieve 96 percent efficiency and cut around 400 kilograms of weight compared with earlier designs.
The Griffin E4MSUa, equipped with Medcom traction inverters, holds Polish type approval and reached 240 km/h during tests on Poland’s Central Rail Line. Homologation is under way in Germany and Austria, and testing in Czechia and Slovakia has been completed, with Newag stating in March 2026 that authorisation applications for those two countries were planned via the European Union Agency for Railways.
