Medcom
Medcom is a Polish designer and manufacturer of power electronics for rail vehicles and public transport, supplying traction equipment to vehicle builders in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
Medcom Sp. z o.o. was founded in 1988 and is based in Warsaw, where all production takes place. The company states that it employed more than 300 people as of 2023 and that it had developed and manufactured more than 28,000 devices as of 2026, across rail, tram, metro, trolleybus and electric bus applications, alongside industrial power supply systems. Medcom holds ISO 9001 and International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) certification.
Rail product portfolio
The rail range covers traction inverters and converters, auxiliary converters, buffer power supplies, battery chargers, train control and monitoring systems, and complete drive packages for locomotives, electric multiple units, metro trains and trams. The multi-system product line covers 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC 16.7 Hz and 25 kV AC 50 Hz.
Silicon carbide (SiC) devices run through most of the company’s traction and propulsion equipment. Medcom’s own published figures put the PSM-175 SiC auxiliary converter used in the Dragon 2 locomotive at 96 percent efficiency and around 400 kilograms lighter than the silicon design it replaced, and the SiC-equipped Moderus Gamma trams in Wrocław at up to 30 percent lower energy consumption than older insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) trams in the same fleet.
Medcom introduced its first energy recovery system for traction vehicles, the E-recycler, in 2013; it stores braking energy and returns it to the overhead line. The SFT-3000k-MSU/PSM-175-SiC-MSU converter set drives Newag’s four-axle Griffin E4MSUa multi-system locomotives and generates the 3×440 V supply for the vehicle’s low-voltage circuits.
Customers and applications
Medcom supplies vehicle builders including Newag, Pesa, Modertrans, Stadler, Škoda Transportation, Hyundai Rotem, CAF and Siemens Mobility’s US operation. Applications include Warsaw and Wrocław trams, Škoda Varsovia and Siemens Inspiro metro trains in Warsaw, and hybrid Impuls multiple units in the Zachodniopomorskie, Dolnośląskie and Łódzkie regions.
Poland’s first hybrid multiple unit, the Newag Impuls 36WEh presented in 2019, uses Medcom traction inverters, auxiliary converters, buffer power supplies, low-voltage switchgear and a train control and monitoring system. The company also supplied the on-board energy storage that allows Stadler’s Lajkonik trams in Kraków to run without overhead contact lines.
Recent activity and certification
Medcom exhibited at the TRAKO International Railway Fair in Gdańsk in September 2025. Its PSM-200W-AC SiC 3UIC auxiliary converter, aimed at high-speed passenger vehicles, won the Ernest Malinowski Award in the rolling stock category, and its FCEC-125 SiC fuel cell converter won the Jan Podoski Award for rolling stock components.
The Griffin E4MSUa, equipped with Medcom traction inverters and auxiliary converters, holds Polish type approval and is certified for 200 km/h; during certification runs on Poland’s Central Rail Line in October 2023 it reached 240 km/h. Newag announced in February 2026 that homologation had begun in Germany and Austria, that testing in Czechia and Slovakia was complete, and that applications for authorisation in those two countries were planned for the second quarter of 2026 via the European Union Agency for Railways.
