Kontron Transportation
Kontron Transportation is an Austrian supplier of mission-critical communication networks for railways, headquartered in Vienna and delivering train radio systems and their successors to operators across Europe.
The company traces its railway telecommunications business to Kapsch CarrierCom, which acquired Nortel’s global technology for the Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R) in 2010. S&T AG, today the Kontron Group, agreed to acquire Kapsch CarrierCom in 2019, and the business has since operated as Kontron Transportation.
According to the company, it has more than 700 employees across 11 European sites and supplies customers in over 25 countries. Kontron Transportation is part of the listed Kontron Group.
Core products and services
The portfolio covers end-to-end railway communication networks: GSM-R core and radio access networks, transmission infrastructure, management tools, applications and terminals. The systems carry the voice and data traffic of railway operations, including ETCS data, at speeds of up to 500 km/h.
For the successor standard, the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), the company develops systems based on railway-dedicated 5G access and core networks. These are combined with mission-critical services (MCX) and interworking functions that let GSM-R and FRMCS operate in parallel during migration.
The company is involved in the standardisation of FRMCS and 5G for rail through working groups and European research projects, including MORANE-2, and is an associated member of Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking.
Market position
Customers are railways and public transport operators, mainly in Europe, spanning national infrastructure managers and urban networks. Recent years have brought contracts in markets including France, the Czech Republic, Ireland and Portugal, covering new deployments as well as upgrades of existing infrastructure.
In the connectivity and communications domain, the company operates across the full value chain, from planning and development to deployment, maintenance and network operation.
Current activity
In July 2026, Kontron Transportation won a contract to modernise the central railway communications core network for Infraestruturas de Portugal, the Portuguese infrastructure manager. The same month, the company announced the extension of a framework agreement with an unnamed European railway operator, worth close to EUR 100 million and covering maintenance and security services through 2035, with an option to extend to 2040.
