Hughes Power System
Hughes Power System is a Swedish manufacturer of switchgear for railway electrification, supplying disconnectors, motor drives and vacuum circuit breakers up to high-voltage levels from Nättraby in southern Sweden.
Hughes Power System AB was registered in 2013 and is headquartered in Nättraby, Karlskrona municipality, in the Blekinge region. The company has around 12 employees and reported revenue of SEK 18.6 million for 2024.
The business is privately held, with registry filings listing members of the Ottosson family on the board. According to the company, its RABS disconnector series and its pole-mounted accessories are designed and manufactured in Sweden.
Switchgear for railway electrification
The RABS series of air-break disconnectors is developed for railway, light rail and tram applications, with single-pole, 1+1-pole and two-pole versions for 15 kV and 25 kV systems. Paired with the company’s EOA motor drives, the disconnectors can be operated remotely from the pole to the SCADA system.
The portfolio also covers railway substations: the OVX range spans models from 6 kV up to the OVX720 and OVX1100, a solid-insulated, gas-free vacuum circuit breaker family for railway feeder applications between 72 kV and 126 kV. The company also produces reclosers, sectionalisers and recloser controls for overhead lines and substations.
Market position
The OVX design is gas-free, using solid insulation and vacuum interrupters instead of SF6. That matters for European power supply and electrification, where grid and railway operators are moving away from fluorinated-gas switchgear under tightening EU rules.
The company states its products are built to remain in operation for more than 30 years without major maintenance. Customers span railway, tram and electricity distribution networks.
Current activity
Hughes Power System is scheduled to exhibit at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, 22–25 September, in Hall 22, booth 300. Ahead of the event, the company has announced the OVX723, a solid-insulated vacuum circuit breaker rated 72.5 kV and 2,500 A, and the EOA400/401 motor drive.
