Fritz Rensmann
Fritz Rensmann is a German family-owned maintenance company in Dortmund specialising in the overhaul of wheelsets and bogies for rail vehicles.
The company was founded in January 1946 by Fritz Rensmann Sr. as a spare parts business for mining vehicles. In 1969, Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) transferred mining locomotive construction to Henschel, which had no interest in building the type; Rensmann took over production of the former KHD design under Henschel licence. From the 1990s, it added maintenance and overhaul of shunting locomotives and railcars, alongside assembly of bogies and wheelset gearboxes.
Fritz Rensmann GmbH & Co. KG remains family-managed. Rail service is today the core business, alongside a fire suppression line and a mining division that supplies battery-electric, diesel-hydraulic and diesel-electric hybrid drives for specialised vehicles in small and medium series.
Wheelset services
The workshop performs scheduled and on-demand overhaul of trailer and driven wheelsets at maintenance levels IS1–IS3 (the levels used in German rolling stock practice, from routine inspection to full overhaul), including driven wheelsets with gearboxes and traction motors up to a combined weight of 4.5 tonnes. Work covers bearing dismantling and inspection, coating, ultrasonic and other non-destructive testing, with customer-specific documentation.
Wheelset pressing runs on a process-controlled two-piston press, handling wheels with a rolling circle diameter of up to 1,250 mm. The press includes an integrated measurement system and documents the full pressing sequence and wheelset geometry.
A wheel disc store holds up to 1,500 units, with IT-supported certificate management.
Bogie services
The company carries out bogie main overhauls, repairs after derailment damage, and wheelset removal and installation. It also offers digital 3D measurement of bogie and locomotive frames, including mobile deployment under workshop conditions.
Bogie pressure testing for standard gauge (1,435 mm) at forces up to 2x250 kN is listed among the rail services; an approved extension of the production hall is to house the new bogie pressure test stand.
Fire suppression systems
Since 2014, the company has manufactured and supplied Kidde Deugra fire protection systems for the rail industry under licence from Ontic UK Ltd, alongside project engineering and long-term spare parts supply.
Market position
Fritz Rensmann works from Dortmund as a manufacturer-independent maintenance provider for rolling stock components. Its quality management system is certified to ISO/TS 22163 (International Railway Industry Standard, IRIS), where the company reports Silver performance status, and to ISO 9001 since 1997. The company has also stated that external ECM (Entity in Charge of Maintenance) certification is planned, though the statement carries no date.
Current activity
Fritz Rensmann exhibits at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin (22–25 September). The mining division has taken part in a series of publicly funded German research projects on autonomous and robot-controlled vehicles for raw material extraction, including ARTUS, MAEV, MAEV2 and AREA-AI.
