Dellner Couplers
Dellner Couplers is a Swedish manufacturer of train connection systems — couplers, gangways and dampers — headquartered in Vika near Falun and supplying passenger rolling stock builders and operators across Europe and worldwide.
Swedish engineer Jan Dellner received his first order in 1941: automatic couplers for Swedish State Railways (SJ). His engineering office was later incorporated as Dellner Couplers AB in 1983. The head office has remained in Vika, in the Dalarna province, ever since.
Family-owned, the company was acquired by investment firm EQT in 2019. Wabtec announced in March 2025 a definitive agreement to acquire Dellner Couplers for USD 960 million, and completed the acquisition on 10 February 2026. Wabtec’s March 2025 announcement put the workforce at more than 1,200 employees across 17 sites in 13 countries, serving over 200 customers.
Products and services
The portfolio covers automatic and semi-permanent couplers, gangways, front hatches, dampers and coupler adapters, spanning the couplings and buffers segment for high-speed, intercity, commuter, metro and light rail vehicles. Production, assembly and aftermarket facilities span 13 countries, including sites in Sweden, Poland, the United States and China, alongside central engineering functions in Vika.
Dellner couplers integrate gas-hydraulic dampers and a deformation unit for reversible and irreversible energy absorption, forming part of the vehicle’s crash energy management (CEM) system. The design dates back to 1985, and the company has since added a High Force Control (HFC) feature that governs force build-up through the damper’s full stroke during high-speed impacts.
Aftermarket services — overhaul, maintenance, repair, modernisation and spare parts supply — cover Dellner systems as well as other coupler brands.
Market position
Dellner supplies rolling stock manufacturers, operators and independent maintenance providers, with a global installed base of roughly 100,000 couplers and 12,500 gangways, according to Wabtec. Its couplers, dampers and gangways form part of the rolling stock components segment covering the vehicle’s connection and crash energy management systems.
Current activity
Wabtec completed the acquisition on 10 February 2026, placing the coupler and gangway business within its Transit segment. In 2026 the company has exhibited jointly with Wabtec, including a shared stand at Asia Pacific Rail in Thailand.
