Trenitalia adds nine Frecciarossa trains in EUR 260m deal

ITALY: Trenitalia has contracted Hitachi Rail to build nine more Frecciarossa 1000 trainsets in a EUR 260 million deal announced 24 March 2026.
The order extends a framework agreement concluded in 2023, which set out a base order of 36 trainsets with options for further units.
Trenitalia had already exercised an option for 10 additional sets before adding the nine now confirmed, bringing the total order under the framework to 55 trainsets.
Fleet build-out through 2031
Deliveries are expected to bring 57 new-generation units into service by 2029. Trenitalia plans to operate a total of 74 Frecciarossa 1000 trainsets by 2031.
The new units will be equipped with Hitachi Rail’s HMAX for Rail system, a digital asset management platform that monitors train performance in real time.
Cross-border capacity in the design
The ETR1000 is certified for operation across eight European rail networks, including those of France, Germany and Spain. The specification supports Trenitalia’s stated ambition to extend Frecciarossa-branded services on international corridors.
The 24 March contract marks the completion of a procurement programme that FS Group has used to systematically scale its high-speed fleet over a defined multi-year horizon.
