Stadler delivers 100th EURODUAL locomotive to European Loc Pool
Stadler has delivered its 100th EURODUAL locomotive to European Loc Pool (ELP) at the beginning of September. The dual-mode unit will immediately enter service with Havelländische Eisenbahn (HVLE), a German freight operator based in Berlin-Spandau and the launch customer for the platform.
ELP, based in Switzerland, is a leasing company that provides modern locomotives with full-service packages, making advanced traction solutions accessible to operators without major upfront investment.
From launch in 2017 to European benchmark
The EURODUAL was first introduced in 2017, when HVLE ordered ten units as the launch customer. Since then, Stadler has delivered the locomotives to multiple European operators through leasing agreements with ELP and direct contracts. The platform has become a reference point for dual-mode technology, combining zero-emission operations on electrified lines with the flexibility of diesel traction where overhead wires are absent. Its uptake reflects both market demand for reliable cross-border freight capacity and political priorities to cut emissions and strengthen interoperability.
“With this 100th EURODUAL now in service, the concept has proven its value as the benchmark for dual-mode traction in Europe,” said Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia, in a statement.
For policymakers, the milestone highlights the growing role of hybrid traction in supporting EU transport and climate objectives, including the Green Deal and TEN-T. For the leasing market, ELP’s expansion shows the increasing importance of flexible. procurement models for rail freight operators.
The next step will be how dual-mode technology is integrated into national freight strategies and future EU initiatives for greener transport
