Siemens signs 30-year Westphalia service deal

GERMANY: Siemens Mobility has secured full maintenance responsibility for 61 battery-electric trains on Germany’s Northern Westphalia network (NNW) under a contract running for up to 30 years.
The service contract was announced on 22 June — separate from the original order for the 61 Mireo Plus B trains, which NWL placed in December 2025. The trains are being financed and provided by Rock Rail under a public-private partnership with the Westfalen-Lippe Local Transport Authority (NWL), with services set to begin in December 2029.
Under the terms, Siemens takes full lifecycle responsibility for the fleet — combining preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance through its Railigent X digital platform. NWL is running a separate tender to select the network operator.
Battery fleet, split roles
Rock Rail owns the trains, backed by John Laing as investor. The financing closed in April 2026. NWL is the contracting authority.
The service contract has a maximum duration of 30 years. Siemens says it is targeting near-100% fleet availability.
The Mireo Plus B is a battery-electric multiple unit. On electrified sections it draws from overhead line; on unelectrified sections it runs on battery. The fleet replaces diesel operations on the NNW.
