Siemens buys Mermec rail diagnostics and signalling units

INDUSTRY: Siemens Mobility has agreed to acquire the core rail diagnostics, signalling and data infrastructure businesses of Italian group Mermec, adding roughly EUR 430m in annual revenue and around 1,700 staff to its rail technology operations.
The deal, announced 14 May from Munich, covers Mermec’s wayside signalling, electrification, telecommunications, diagnostics, analytics and data infrastructure divisions — operations spanning customers in more than 70 countries.
Ferrosud’s manufacturing plant in Matera, southern Italy, will become Siemens’ industrial hub for next-generation diagnostics development.
Transaction scope and exclusions
Not all of Mermec transfers. Three units — Angelstar, Mont Saint Michel/Compagnie des Signaux, and Mermec Deutschland — remain with Angelo Holding and will continue as separate signalling businesses.
The acquired businesses trace their origins to Mermec’s founding in 1970 in Apulia, southern Italy. The transaction is subject to regulatory clearance and is expected to close before the end of 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Consolidation in digital rail infrastructure
The acquisition follows Vossloh’s announced move to acquire British LiDAR specialist Cordel Group, disclosed a day earlier. Both transactions target the same layer of the rail system: automated condition monitoring and infrastructure data.
Siemens positions the Ferrosud plant in Matera as the industrial base for its next generation of diagnostics products. Integration and product development timelines have not been disclosed.
