SBB partners with RDC to launch Basel–Malmö EuroNight service via Denmark
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) will launch a new EuroNight between Basel and Malmö from 15 April 2026, operated in cooperation with RDC Deutschland. The tri-weekly service will connect Switzerland with southern Sweden via Germany and Denmark, with tickets available from 4 November 2025 through SBB sales channels.
Trains will depart Basel SBB on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 17:35, arriving in Malmö at 09:35 the following morning. Southbound services will leave Malmö on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 18:57, reaching Basel at 11:30. Key stops include Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt Süd, Hamburg, Padborg, Kolding, Odense, Høje Taastrup, and Copenhagen Airport—but notably not København H, which is served by local S-train and Øresund connections.
The train will offer around 350 places across sleeper, couchette, and seated compartments, including a barrier-free cabin and a bistro section between Basel and Padborg.
The project is backed by around CHF 47 million in funding under Switzerland’s CO₂ Act through 2030, pending parliamentary approval. If the allocation is not confirmed, all tickets will be refunded. Rolling stock will come from existing fleets, and traction responsibilities have not been disclosed.
Why it matters: The EuroNight restores a direct overnight link between Switzerland and Scandinavia, demonstrating how public–private partnerships can expand sustainable cross-border rail.
What’s next: Parliamentary approval of climate funding will decide whether the service proceeds; details on rolling stock and traction are still to come before ticket sales open on 4 November 2025.
