Railchap robot speeds up ERTMS switch inspections

NORWAY: A new automated inspection setup combining the Railchap robot and Siemens Mobility’s Railigent software is being used to check switches ahead of installation of the new ERTMS signalling system.
The system combines the Railchap robot, developed by Norwegian company Railway Robotics, with Siemens Mobility’s Railigent data platform to collect and analyse condition data from switches ahead of the ERTMS upgrade.
Railchap runs directly on the track and examines key switch components, transmitting detailed condition data to the Railigent platform for analysis.
Automation enters ERTMS installation work
A manual check of a switch typically takes around 30 minutes and requires staff to access the track. With the robot-based system, the same task can be completed in about 60 seconds.
The technology is being applied as part of Norway’s nationwide ERTMS programme, where switches and other track components must be assessed before the signalling system is installed.
