Portugal expands Alstom commuter train order to 153 units

PORTUGAL: State railway operator Comboios de Portugal has expanded its commuter train procurement from 117 to 153 units through an addendum to its Alstom–DST rolling stock contract.
The amendment, signed on March 10, adds 36 electric multiple units to the programme, accelerating the national fleet renewal plan.
The expansion forms part of what the Portuguese government describes as the country’s largest rolling stock investment.
Fleet renewal programme scaled up
The additional trains increase the order for Alstom Adessia Stream electric multiple units to 153 units, to be supplied by the Alstom–DST consortium.
The trains are intended primarily for regional and suburban services, where Portugal is seeking to replace ageing rolling stock and increase capacity on busy commuter corridors.
Deliveries brought forward to 2031
Alongside the order increase, the revised agreement accelerates the delivery schedule, with the final trains now scheduled to enter service by 2031.
Earlier delivery of the additional units is expected to support higher service frequencies on commuter routes while speeding up the replacement of older trains in the national fleet.
