Digital platform publishes live train movement data

GREECE: The Greek transport ministry has launched a platform providing public access to real-time train movements and operational network data.
The platform went live on Feb. 25 and allows users to track train positions, routes and network status via an interactive map. The launch follows commitments to strengthen operational monitoring after the Tempi accident.
The initiative makes selected live traffic data accessible through a public interface alongside existing traffic control systems.
What the platform shows
The website displays train positions on a digital map, with route identifiers and basic operational status on main corridors including Athens–Thessaloniki.
The platform operates under the authority of the transport ministry, drawing on data from the rail system’s traffic management infrastructure.
The Tempi accident was Greece’s deadliest rail crash in decades, when a passenger train and a freight train collided near the town of Tempi in February 2023.
Intense scrutiny after disaster
The disaster triggered intense scrutiny of how train movements are monitored and communicated across the system, including the reliability of operational oversight and the availability of real-time information.
That context helps explain why the ministry is positioning the new platform as more than a customer information tool.
By publishing live train movement data in a public-facing interface, the state adds an extra transparency and monitoring layer around day-to-day operations — a visible “who is where” baseline that sits alongside the railway’s internal control and signalling systems.
