PKP PLK launches major tender for Baltic port rail upgrade

Polish infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PLK) has announced a design-and-build tender for the modernisation of Line 201 between Gdańsk Osowa and Gdynia Główna — a key freight artery serving the Port of Gdynia. The contract, valued at more than PLN 1.3 billion (EUR 300 million), covers 13.5 km of track and will add a third line to boost capacity on one of Poland’s most congested corridors.
The tender, opened in early October 2025 with bids due by 7 November, includes full electrification, new signalling, and reconstruction of four stations: Gdynia Wielki Kack, Karwiny, Stadion and Wzgórze Św. Maksymiliana. Around 40 bridges and viaducts will be modernised. Two additional stops — Gdynia Źródło Marii and Mały Kack — remain optional.
Part of the wider upgrade of the “Węglówka” (Coal Line) linking Bydgoszcz and the Tricity, the project will improve access to the Baltic ports and raise passenger speeds to 140 km/h and freight speeds to 100 km/h. The third track is expected to remove long-standing freight bottlenecks and shorten travel time between Kościerzyna and Gdynia by about 14 minutes.
Freight corridor under long-term rebuild
Construction is scheduled from Q4 2026 to Q1 2031, with full completion by 2032. Funding will combine PLK resources, national budget support and a loan from the European Investment Bank, which earlier backed the broader Line 201 programme worth PLN 9.25 billion.
Outlook
The Gdańsk–Gdynia section marks “Section C” of the Kościerzyna–Gdynia project. It follows tenders launched earlier in 2025 for the Maksymilianowo–Wierzchucin and Wierzchucin–Lipowa Tucholska segments, as PLK pushes to modernise its north–south freight corridor.
