ÖBB expands Vienna South terminal with 44 percent capacity boost

Construction of the final expansion phase at Vienna South intermodal terminal has just begun. ÖBB (Austrian National Railways) plans to increase capacity from 380,000 to 547,000 twenty-foot containers annually by end of 2026.
The expansion includes one new automated gantry crane and upgrades to two existing cranes. The terminal will feature eight 700-meter loading tracks after completion. This simplifies train handling and significantly increases throughput capacity.
Additional road adaptations and technical equipment upgrades will complete the project. Full operations are expected to start in early 2027.
Strategic transport hub
Vienna South has served as the main freight terminal for Austria's capital region since opening in late 2016. The facility sits at the intersection of the S1 outer ring motorway and the Pottendorf Line.
This location provides direct access to three trans-European rail axes. The terminal connects major European economic centers through established rail corridors.
TSA (Terminal Service Austria) operates the facility. The company handles containers, swap bodies, and unaccompanied semi-trailers in combined transport operations.
Green Deal alignment
The capacity expansion directly supports EU Green Deal targets for modal shift. More freight capacity on rail reduces road transport and associated emissions.
The terminal expansion represents continued investment in intermodal infrastructure across key European transport corridors. ÖBB expects the enhanced facility to attract additional freight volumes from road to rail operations.
