Norrtåg launches EUR 337 million tender for 20 regional trains

SWEDEN: The Swedish northern rail operator has opened procurement for around 20 new regional trains at EUR 337 million, linked to the Tågvision 2040 capacity programme.
All four owner regions — Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland Härjedalen and Västernorrland — have now committed financial guarantees, clearing the path for formal procurement to begin through AB Transitio, the regional company that procures, finances and manages rolling stock on behalf of Sweden’s regional transport authorities. The new trains are intended to replace ageing stock nearing end-of-life and to provide additional capacity as the Norrbotniabanan line is extended northward.
Fleet renewal tied to capacity programme
The four guarantees were required before procurement could formally open. Under the Swedish regional rail model, Transitio issues the tender, acquires the trains and leases them back to Norrtåg, shielding the operator from direct capital risk.
Tågvision 2040 is the joint long-term strategy of the four owner regions for regional rail development in northern Sweden. The new fleet forms a central element of that programme, providing the base for expanded frequencies and new connections across the Norrtåg network.
Delivery set for 2031–2032
Production and delivery of new rolling stock typically requires four to five years from contract award. Delivery in 2031–2032 aligns with planned Norrbotniabanan service extensions across the region.
