Finnish operator launches direct Italy–Sweden rail freight link

Nurminen Logistics will launch weekly rail freight services between Parma and Sweden’s Örebro region from mid-February 2025, opening a new sustainable corridor for Italian exporters targeting Scandinavian markets.
The Finnish logistics operator is investing in a permanent office in Parma to support the new route, which will offer three-day transit times with weekly departures. The service connects Italy’s industrial heartland—home to textiles, automotive components, ceramics, and food production—to Nurminen’s wholly-owned terminal outside Örebro.
Strategic corridor development
The Parma route complements Nurminen’s existing Modena–Sweden service, creating a systematic Italy-to-Scandinavia rail network. The operator already moves 55,000 wagons annually across Nordic, European, and Asian routes.
“We see increasing demand for sustainable transport solutions between Europe and Scandinavia,” said Marjut Linnajärvi, Vice President of International Rail Operations at Nurminen Logistics. The company emphasizes door-to-door capability including forwarding, customs clearance, and terminal handling.
Modal shift opportunity
The new link targets Italian shippers seeking to reduce Scope 3 emissions through modal shift from road to rail. Three-day transit times match competitive trucking schedules while cutting carbon footprints—a growing procurement requirement for European supply chains.
Our Quick Analysis: Nurminen’s Parma investment signals confidence in Europe’s rail freight recovery and sustainability mandates driving modal shift. The systematic build-out of Italy–Sweden corridors (Modena plus Parma) suggests the Finnish operator sees long-term structural demand rather than opportunistic capacity. For Italian exporters, reliable weekly departures to Sweden provide an alternative to road haulage as ESG pressure intensifies.
