Six years of tests have shown that digital automatic coupling works on freight trains. Converting Europe’s freight fleet – about 450,000 wagons and 17,000 locomotives – would cost around EUR 13bn on the sector’s own estimate. No deadline for the switch has been set, and the EU’s draft infrastructure budget for 2028–2034 does not mention it.
