Stadler’s dual-mode locomotives gain ground in Europe
Stadler’s EURODUAL platform continues to expand its presence across Europe, as leasing companies and operators adopt the dual-mode locomotives for freight operations. The units are supplied through leasing arrangements with European Loc Pool (ELP), enabling operators to access advanced traction without major upfront investments.
Introduced in recent years, the EURODUAL combines electric operation on wired routes with diesel capability on non-electrified sections. The technology addresses demand for cross-border freight capacity while supporting EU climate and transport goals such as the Green Deal and TEN-T.
Sector observers note that the locomotives have become a benchmark for dual-mode traction, demonstrating how hybrid solutions can support decarbonisation without requiring full network electrification.
Leasing model drives uptake
ELP, based in Switzerland, provides the locomotives under full-service packages that reduce financial risk for operators. This model reflects a broader trend in the rail freight sector towards flexible procurement, as companies seek to modernise fleets while maintaining cost control.
“Hybrid traction is moving from pilot projects to daily operations, showing its relevance for the market,” industry analysts comment.
Outlook
The continuing rollout of dual-mode locomotives illustrates how technology and business models converge to support greener freight. Future developments will focus on how hybrid traction is integrated into national freight strategies and EU initiatives for sustainable transport.
