Dutch defence contracts DB for military escort wagons

NETHERLANDS: The Netherlands has contracted Deutsche Bahn to provide two military escort wagons available on 10 days’ notice for pan-European defence materiel transports.
The Dutch defence organisation signed the contract with Deutsche Bahn on 1 April, securing access to two Military Escort Wagons (MBW). The wagons carry military personnel responsible for securing and inspecting cargo during rail transport.
The wagons are not permanently attached to a transport train. On notification, Deutsche Bahn delivers them to wherever Dutch defence requires for a given movement.
Contracted access, not owned fleet
Each wagon is fitted with seating, a toilet and a small catering section, allowing the train detachment to remain on board and operational throughout a journey.
Deutsche Bahn has long-standing experience providing military escort wagons in support of Bundeswehr transport operations across Europe. The Netherlands is drawing on that capacity through a service contract rather than acquiring dedicated stock.
The MBW arrangement is separate from the Dutch military’s broader rolling stock programme. The Defence Movement and Transport Organisation owns 448 freight wagons, including flatbed and armour-capable stock built up since 2022, covering the transport of vehicles and materiel rather than escort personnel.
Dutch defence describes the wagons as suitable for deployment across the European rail network. Vehicle authorisations covering the full European network have not been confirmed.
