CCTV & security systems
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems on railway rolling stock provide continuous video recording of passenger saloons, vestibules, cab interiors, and vehicle exteriors to support incident investigation, passenger safety, and security operations.
A train-borne CCTV system consists of Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, a network video recorder (NVR), network switches, and a data management interface. Camera positions cover all passenger saloons, door vestibules, the driver’s cab, and typically the train nose exterior.
System configuration
All activity is recorded whenever the train is operational; recording begins without manual driver activation.
IP-based camera systems have replaced analogue closed-circuit systems across most new European rolling stock since the mid-2010s. IP cameras operating at full HD (1,920 × 1,080) resolution provide forensically adequate image quality for incident investigation, and the transition to digital recording eliminates the tape-management burden of earlier analogue systems.
Hardware standards
All onboard CCTV hardware must comply with EN 50155:2017 for temperature, vibration, and power supply resilience. Cameras mounted in non-weather-protected exterior positions must achieve appropriate ingress protection (IP) rating against moisture and particulate ingress.
Temperature rating must accommodate the full OT3 range of −25°C to +70°C for continuous depot standby operation.
Data retention and access
Recording retention periods are defined by operator specification in accordance with national regulatory requirements. Video offload to ground systems takes place via public mobile networks (4G/5G) or depot Wi-Fi, or by direct extraction of storage media at depot; the narrowband GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications — Railway) radio system does not support video transfer, and FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) is not yet in operational service in European fleets.
GDPR (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) applies to all personal data captured by CCTV; operators must document retention periods, access controls, and data-subject request procedures. Cybersecurity obligations under CENELEC TS 50701 and IEC 62443 apply to onboard network security, including CCTV system access controls.
Integration with PIS and operations
CCTV systems interface with the passenger information system (PIS) to receive passenger emergency call events; call location is relayed to the surveillance system to direct control-room attention to the relevant camera. Footage is used by train operating companies and infrastructure managers for incident reconstruction, personal injury claims, and driver-behaviour review.
