Baden-Württemberg orders 26 Coradia Max EMUs
Baden-Württemberg’s rolling-stock agency SFBW has ordered 26 additional Coradia Max double-deck electric multiple-units from Alstom in a contract valued at around EUR 500 million. The deal includes a full-service maintenance agreement running until the end of 2055.
The purchase uses an option agreed in May 2022 under a wider framework covering 130 Coradia Max trains, with scope for up to 100 additional units. The Coradia Max fleet is scheduled to enter service from December 2026, with the additional 26 units delivered from mid to late 2028.
SFBW said the extra units will add seating capacity on heavily used regional routes in one of Germany’s busiest state networks. The trains will be made available to DB Regio Baden-Württemberg and Arverio, including services in rail network 35 (Stuttgart–Bodensee-Netz).
Train configuration and accessibility
Alstom said the Baden-Württemberg Coradia Max is a four-car double-deck regional EMU. It is 106 m long, has 380 seats, and has a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The units can operate in multiple to boost capacity when required.
The design targets step-free access at 760 mm platforms. For stations with other platform heights, the trains will have lifts to support wheelchair access.
