Automated train tested on Nordic ETCS main line

FINLAND: Siemens Mobility carried out a demonstration of automated train operation using Automatic Train Operation integrated with the European Train Control System Level 2 on a Finnish main line.
The test took place on the 19 km Juurikorpi–Hamina branch line, using a modernised train owned by Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto and operated by VR.
Siemens described the run as the first automated train operation on an ETCS-equipped main line in the Nordic region, linking the test to Finland’s Digirail programme to replace legacy signalling systems.
Semi-automated operation tested on ETCS line
The demonstration used semi-automated operation at GoA2 level, where the train performs acceleration, braking and stopping automatically while a driver remains responsible for supervision.
Tests showed the train carrying out automated stops from line speed under ATO control.
Demonstration linked to Finland’s Digirail programme
The trial forms part of Finland’s Digirail initiative to introduce the European Train Control System across the national network and replace existing signalling technology.
ATO over ETCS enables automated acceleration, coasting and braking while ETCS supervises speed and movement authority.
Similar ATO-over-ETCS setups are being explored across Europe as railways look to increase capacity and operational consistency without introducing entirely new signalling systems.
