Alstom to supply 70 trains for Toronto metro upgrade
Alstom has reached an agreement with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to supply 70 new subway trains for Line 2 in Toronto, in a deal valued at CAD 2.3 billion (around EUR 1.4 billion). The order is centred on fleet replacement for one of the city’s core high-frequency routes.
The contract covers 70 six-car Metropolis metro trainsets. Alstom said the agreement also includes options for up to 150 additional trainsets, subject to TTC requirements.
Fifty-five of the 70 trains are intended to replace the existing T1 fleet on Line 2. The remaining 15 units are planned for extensions to Lines 1 and 2, including the Line 1 Yonge North extension and the Line 2 Scarborough extension.
Designed and engineered in Canada
Alstom said the trains will be designed and engineered in Canada, with final assembly at its Thunder Bay facility in Ontario. Testing is planned in Kingston, Ontario.
Alstom expects the programme to generate up to 945 direct jobs in Canada, including more than 600 at the company, plus additional roles in the supply chain.
For TTC, the procurement is part of a wider reliability and capacity programme that combines new rolling stock with infrastructure and operational upgrades. For Alstom, the order adds a major North American Metropolis reference and secures further work for its Canadian production sites.
